The Standard Journal Newspapers, publishers of The Rexburg Standard Journal in Madison County and the Fremont County Herald-Chronicle in Fremont County, have been sold to Pioneer Newspapers, a family-owned publishing business which publishes daily newspapers in Idaho, Utah, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, according to John T. Cribb of Bolitho-Cribb & Associates who represented the sellers in the transaction.
There will be no immediate changes in the way the newspapers are operated, according to Roger O. Porter, publisher of the Standard Journal Newspapers. The staff will remain the same as will other facets of the operation. “If we could have hand-picked someone to carry on the tradition of the newspapers, it would have been Pioneer,” Porter says. “My dad and I have been acquainted with the Pioneer organization for a number of years and have always been impressed with the level of community involvement they bring to the communities in which they operate newspapers.”
Pioneer Newspapers is a private, family-owned publishing business, with the stock of the company held by members of the Scripps family. The Scripps family has a long history in newspapers, starting with E.W. Scripps in the middle 1800s in the Midwest. Pioneer operates daily newspapers in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Logan, Utah, Nampa, Pocatello, Bozeman, Montana, Ellensburg, Washington, and Havre, Montana. The company also owns weekly newspapers in Big Sky, Montana, West Yellowstone, Montana, Emmett and Lakeview, Oregon, as well as an office building in Seattle and two magazines published in Klamath Falls. In addition to operating newspapers in these communities, Pioneer provides management services to and is closely associated with the Skagit Valley Publishing Company, which owns a daily newspaper in Mount Vernon, Washington, and a weekly publication in Anacortes, Washington.
Richard T. Ballou, a 1986 journalism graduate of Ricks College in Rexburg and a 1990 journalism graduate of Utah State University in Logan, Utah, will be the new publisher of the Standard Journal Newspapers.
Pioneer Newspapers President David Lord said of Pioneer’s purchase of the papers, “We’re honored to be able to purchase quality newspapers like The Rexburg Standard Journal and the Fremont County Herald-Chronicle. The Porter family has made substantial contributions to the newspaper business and to the Upper Snake River Valley, and we plan to continue that tradition.”
