The Mountaineer Publishing Company, parent company of The Enterprise Mountaineer, was purchased February 27, 2002 from Adelaide Daniels Key of Asheville by her son, Jonathon Key, 43, according to Gary Greene of Cribb & Associates, who assisted the Key family in this transaction. The newspaper has 9,000 paid circulation and is published Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
In the past couple of decades, independently owned newspapers across the country have declined while the number owned by large media companies has risen. Key said he decided to buy the newspaper to prevent that from happening to The Enterprise Mountaineer. He has worked at the paper since 1990 and became publisher in 2000.
“This is the realization of a lifelong dream,” Jonathon Key said. “I’m excited that the opportunity presented itself to keep the company in local ownership and that the newspaper’s relationship with the community of Haywood County will remain local,” he said.
“I grew up with my grandfather and my father as newspapermen,” Adelaide Key said. “I’m proud that Jonathon has been the recipient of these newspaper genes and because he lives in Haywood County and cares so deeply for Haywood County, I felt it was fitting for him to own the paper.”
Jonathon resides in Waynesville with his wife Barbara and their sons, Jonathon, 9 and Thomas, 6.
