Crescent Media Group has sold its weekly newspaper in Phenix City, Ala., to Family Media, Inc., an Oklahoma-based company with newspapers in Florida and Mississippi, according to Gary Greene, of Cribb, Greene & Associates, who represented the seller in the transaction.

Andrew Babb, Crescent Media’s owner, said the sale was brought about by his desire to concentrate efforts of his company, which owns papers in Georgia and South Carolina, on larger markets.

“We have enjoyed our association with the people of Phenix City these past three years,” Babb said in announcing the sale.

Crescent Media and its affiliated company, Spartanburg-based Mid-South Management Co., Inc., own and operate 18 newspapers and magazines across the Southeast.

Family Media, Inc., based in Miami, Okla, was started in 1996 by newspaperman Jerry R. Turner, who has 25 years of newspaper experience.

The first property FMI purchased was The Weekly Post and Sand Mountain’s Shoppers Guide in Rainsville, Ala. A year later, it purchased the competing DeKalb Press. Wanting to move back to be close to family, Turner sold the company to newspaper friend Southern Newspapers.

Since then Family Media has owned and operated four weekly Arkansas newspapers, two Kansas weeklies, one Louisiana weekly, two Oklahoma daily newspapers, and an active printing plant.

Family Media now owns the Mississippi weekly Bay Press in Biloxi and twice-weekly Sanford (Fla.) Herald. In addition, it owns and publishes the industry advertising trade publication, Publishers Idea Exchange, as well as KELF, a television station serving northeast Oklahoma.

“I am excited to be back in business in Alabama,” said Turner who first moved to the state in 1988 to be editor of the Andalusia Star-News for Boone Newspapers. Turner would later be publisher for Boone in Demopolis, Ala. before being promoted to publisher of Boone’s six-day daily in Miami, Okla.

“We look forward to working with the staff and serving our communities,” Turner said. “I appreciate Mr. Babb allowing us the opportunity to build upon his company’s work there.”

Cribb, Greene & Associates is an eighty-three year old newspaper brokerage firm with offices in Charlottesville, Va. and Bozeman, Mont.
