Sample News Group, the Huntingdon, (PA)-based publisher of hometown newspapers, has acquired three daily newspapers, two in Pennsylvania and one in New York, from GateHouse Media, Inc., effective Tuesday, September 2, according to Gary Greene of Cribb, Greene & Associates, who represented the seller in the transaction.
The newspapers include the Morning Times of Sayre, Pennsylvania, The Standard-Journal of Milton-Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and The Palladium Times of Oswego, New York. The acquisition makes Sample one of the largest publishing groups in Pennsylvania. The group includes 10 daily newspapers, 20 weekly newspapers, two business and lifestyle magazines, and three commercial printing plants in five states.
The acquisition is the third in over a year. In February, the group acquired the Times Record of Brunswick, Maine, and last November purchased State College Magazine and Pennsylvania Business Central in State College.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed. George “Scoop” Sample, chief executive officer of Sample News Group, and Michael Reed, CEO of GateHouse Media, current owner of the papers, made the announcement.
“These are challenging times for newspapers,” Sample said. “But we specialize in small, hometown papers where local news is the most important news. Our smaller size (10 daily newspapers) allows us the time and energy to focus on our papers.”
“We’re not Wall Street investors, but a company that has enjoyed writing news about our communities for over 60 years.”
The three new papers join a group that includes daily newspapers in Bedford, Huntingdon, Tyrone, Latrobe and Corry, all in Pennsylvania, and two dailies in Maine, The Journal Tribune in Biddeford, and the Times-Record in Brunswick.
The company also publishes weekly newspapers in Ebensburg and Shippensburg and Ocean City and Cape May, N.J.
Cribb, Greene & Associates is an eighty-five year old newspaper brokerage company with offices in Virginia, Missouri, and Montana.
